PARU DESHPANDE, IMEC
VP LIFE SCIENCES & IMAGING DEPARTMENT

Paru Deshpande completed his PhD at Princeton University in the area of polymer self-assembly for lithography. After completing his studies, he joined BioNano Genomics, a life sciences startup company, as the first employee. During his 7 years at BioNano Genomics, he led projects in single molecule DNA detection and assay development. In 2011 he took on the role of Director of Instrument Development and also managed early product testing at customer sites. In June 2012, he joined imec and is now Vice President, leading the department of Life Sciences & Imaging.

ELECTROCEUTICALS: NEW THERAPIES FOR OLD DISEASES

Traditional cures for diseases have focused mainly on molecular targets based on chemical compounds. However, there is a paradigm shift towards an old but today a very alive treatment option: bioelectricity. This talk will cover the future opportunities that lie in using electroceuticals to treat diseases such as diabetes and depression. Electroceuticals are small, smart devices implanted near neural tissue that target disease by interfering with the electrical pulses being sent to and from organs. Nanotechnology will play a key role in the new devices being designed to push this field forward.
