NICK VAN HELLEPUTTE, IMEC
R&D MANAGER BIOMEDICAL CIRCUITS & SYSTEMS

Nick Van Helleputte received the MS degree in electrical engineering in 2004 from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. He received his Ph.D. degree from the same institute in 2009 (MICAS research group). His PhD research focused on low-power ultra-wide-band analog front-end receivers for ranging applications. He joined imec in 2009 as an Analog R&D Design Engineer. He is currently R&D manager of the biomedical circuits and systems team. His research focus is on ultra-low-power circuits for biomedical applications. He has been involved in analog and mixed-signal ASIC design for wearable and implantable healthcare applications. Nick is an IEEE and SSCS member and served on the technical program committee of VLSI circuits symposium and ISSCC.

 

Presentation abstract

SMART GASTRO-INTESTINAL IMPLANTS

It is estimated that up to 20% of the general population suffers from one or more functional gastro-intestinal disorders. In certain cases the impact on the quality of life of these – often chronic – conditions can be extremely harsh. Today’s diagnostic tools are unfortunately lacking and patients often go undiagnosed and get prescribed incorrect and ineffective treatments. A breakthrough solution could be in the form of a smart implant or ingestible. Thanks to extreme miniaturization and ultra-low-power sensing, such a device can monitor the gastro-intestinal tract during multiple full  complete digestive cycles. The implants can measure environmental, electrophysiological and electrochemical parameters providing unparalleled new insights for physicians. This talk will focus on the various technical challenges and innovations for such smart implants. This includes integrated multi-modal sensor technologies, integrated ultra-low power electronics with wireless connection and bio-compatible packaging technologies.
