WIM VAN THILLO, IMEC
PROGRAM DIRECTOR PERCEPTIVE SYSTEMS

Wim Van Thillo received his master degree in electrical engineering and his undergraduate degree in business economics from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. He obtained a PhD degree from the same university based on his research in imec’s wireless communications group. In 2008, he was a visiting researcher at UC Berkeley’s Connectivity Lab. From 2012 to 2014 he led imec’s 79 GHz radar R&D program. Since January 2015 Wim is responsible for imec’s R&D in cellular and WiFi transceivers, 60 GHz communications, 79 GHz radar and 140 GHz sensors.

PERCEPTIVE SYSTEMS FOR SMART MOBILITY: FROM CAR-LEVEL SENSOR FUSION TO FLEET-LEVEL FEDERATED DATA ANALYTICS

Perceptive IoT systems are cyber-physical systems with perception and connectivity capabilities on par or superior to those of humans. Thanks to these capabilities, they can seamlessly blend into our everyday environments, creating a fully intuitive IoT. The autonomous car is a very well-known example that combines cutting edge sensing and processing capabilities to this effect. When technology cost comes down and manufacturing volumes go up, plenty more applications will emerge, leading to truly smart cities, infrastructure, homes and industrial environments.

In this talk, consider radar as a sensing technique currently undergoing dramatic reduction of cost, power consumption and form factor, while advances in semiconductor technology scaling and machine learning developments deliver an increase in resolution and algorithmic capabilities. Adding sensor fusion and federated data analytics to the mix will lead to truly perceptive systems.
