BART ONSIA, IMEC
INNOVATION PROGRAM MANAGER FLANDERS

Bart Onsia is Innovation Program Manager Flanders at imec. His focus is on fueling the local industry with imec’s research in the field of Energy. He translates and tailors technology to the needs of the industrial tissue surrounding imec. He connects innovation with business and casts cross-disciplinary partnerships.

He received a Master’s degree in industrial sciences from KU Leuven in 1997, and joined imec in 1999. First as a researcher on cleaning processes for sub-micron CMOS technologies. From 2007 on with a business development focus on the local industry.

MASS CUSTOMIZATION, THE KEY TO BUILDING-INTEGRATED PV

Buildings are responsible for about 40% of the EU’s energy consumption and one third of the greenhouse gas emissions. On-site renewable energy generation provides a way to reduce these emissions.

One of the most attractive options is photovoltaic energy. But how can we deploy solar cells on a large scale in a context of rising urbanization and increasingly compact construction? Rooftop PV modules will not be enough. We will need to add solar energy generation capacity to other elements of a building’s skin: to the facades, windows, louvers, etc.

These elements determine a building’s identity, character and uniqueness, consequently a bleak “one size fits all” approach falls short of the requirements. In these circumstances, PV elements should be seamlessly and aesthetically integrated in the building skin to become truly building integrated PV products with bespoke dimensions, looks, transparency, without compromising the electrical performance and durability. Quite the opposite from standard PV products!

How to efficiently connect these to the DC nanogrid? How to manufacture these elements without losing the economies of scale of standardized production? We need DC/DC convertors and module manufacturing technologies that embrace design flexibility.

Technologies that enable mass customization! Technologies like those we’ll unveil in this talk.
