Chronic Kidney Disease Monitoring

Chronic kidney disease is a condition characterized by patients losing renal function, and resulting in fluid and waste accumulation in the body. To replace the kidneys’ functionality and remove waste products and fluid from the body, hemodialysis treatment is often used.

In this demo, we showcase imec’s technology to monitor the fluid status of kidney patients, as well as imec’s ion sensor technology to monitor ion concentrations in the blood or dialysate.

The former technology provides patients with insights into their water budget, which in turn could help them understand how their dialysis sessions are progressing. The latter technology provides insights in patients’ ion concentrations – which is key to tracking possible chronic kidney disease complications such as cardiac arrhythmia, high blood pressure and renal bone disease.
